Run to the Sun is an Anchorage business for woman’s clothing and also tanning. They had a fashion show at the Woman’s Show in Anchorage, Alaska in April 2010. The show is pretty good but the lighting at the Sullivan Arena is absolutely horrible – like something out of a bomb shelter. Hopefully these photos aren’t too bad. I met several of the models and shot with them at separate photo shoots – but it will take some time to post those photos.

Miami is an eclectic market to work in as a fashion model. It is very specific to its environment yet caters to production on an international platform. First an individual has to determine where they realistically fit into industry standard. There are different types of modeling in the South Florida region consisting of runway, catalog, lifestyle print, plus modeling, fitness, trade events, commercials, and television/film. Most agencies will list their requirements that they look for on their respective websites and the best means of contact.
An individual who is seeking representation as a possible fashion model (runway, editorial, catalog) is suggested to take some regular digital style photographs and send these along with pertinent measurements and contact information (age, height, suit or dress size). If interested, an agency will contact a prospective model for an interview and decide if they have a clientele for that individual. For the digitals; typically a female would want to be in a solid two-piece bathing suit with no make up and hair pulled back so the agency can determine body type and facial features. A male model would be advised to wear a gym short or bathing suit. A female who is interested in fashion related assignments typically needs to fit specific criteria. Once accepted by an agency, they will guide you to obtaining the proper tools for your career (portfolio, composite card, etc.).
Why have an agent? Agents are licensed and bonded by the state. They are regulated in their practices and are the individuals who have established relationships with decision makers such as designers, casting directors, producers, advertising agencies, and photographers. A reputable agent will help guide your career and handle the details for each assignment. Agent’s work on commission so it behooves them to work with talent they strongly believe will work for their clientele. It is always beneficial to research a company and ask questions before signing any agreements.
A model that is being developed will have some work on their end too. Remember, as a model, you are the product and your own business. With nothing, you get nothing. A model needs to constantly practice and stay updated on the latest trends and runway walks. Obtaining the right type of photographs that will reflect your abilities, diversity, and yet appeal to mass markets. Modeling in South Florida is seasonal; we secure most of our assignments from the months of October to May. When we are “out of season”, it is suggested models continue to develop their books and tools to keep clients interested in using them. Some models opt to travel during this time and explore markets such as New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles, or abroad. Remember, the pictures you use in South Florida may not reflect on the market you are traveling to.
If you find yourself not receiving the response you hoped for, there are several different types of modeling opportunities. Perhaps your look or abilities lean more towards television or lifestyle commercial modeling. Continue to believe in yourself, stay professional, and try to get advice on where you may fall into this industry. Remember, whether looking for representation in a Miami modeling agency, Fort Lauderdale modeling agency, or any South Florida modeling agency, professionalism is the key!

We of the so-called Silent Generation
Looked out across that Great Dividing Range
Which loomed so large in our imagination
– The past was thataway, but not too strange…
We knew the crystal-set, had lots of friends

I was recently invited by my buddy, fashion photographer extraordinaire Jeremiah Wilson, to visit one his fashion shoots. He was shooting a campaign for Steve Madden shoes at Poly Prep in Brooklyn. I went down to pay Jeremiah a visit, and decided to shoot some photos of my own, and interview Jeremiah for one the publications I write for. I thought a ‘behind the scenes’ of a fashion shoot piece would be interesting to work on, and it turned out that way. I had a blast doing both. Some of mt photos came out great, but I was cheating. There has been considerable dispute over the origins of the ugg boot style, with both Australia and New Zealand claiming to have been the originators of the footwear.[3] Nevertheless, it appears that the boots were used by aviators during World War I, who referred to them as "fug boots" (surmised to be a shortened form of "flying ugg boots"),[4] and that they were present in rural regions of Australia during the 1920s.[3] While it is not clear when manufacturing started, by 1933, ugg boots were being manufactured by Blue Mountains Ugg Boots,[5] and Mortels Sheepskin Factory were making the boots from the late 1950s.[4]
In the 1960s, ugg boots became a popular option for competitive surfers,[6] who used the boots to keep their feet warm after exiting from the surf.[7] It was surfing which helped popularise the boots outside of Australia and New Zealand, when surfer Brian Smith started selling the boots in the United States through the company Ugg Holdings, Inc. in 1979.[7] Later, ugg boots emerged as a fashion trend in the United States, with celebrities such as Kate Hudson, Sarah Jessica Parker and Pamela Anderson choosing to wear the boots, creating increased demand.[8][9] However, Pamela Anderson renounced ugg boots in 2007 upon realising that they were made from animal skin.[9]
The terms ugg boots, ugh boots and ug boots have been used as generic terms for sheepskin boots in Australia and New Zealand since at least the 1970s,[1][6] although individual accounts have suggested that the terms (or variations thereof) were employed earlier. The 1970s saw the emergence of advertising using the names,[1] but Brian Smith has stated that the boots were referred to as "uggs" long before the word was trademarked (in 1971),[10] and Frank Mortel claims to have been making ugg boots under the "ugg" name since 1958.
