Meta_Shooting_A_Fashion_Shoot

I was recently invited by my buddy, fashion photographer extraordinaire Jeremiah Wilson, to visit one his fashion shoots. He was shooting a campaign for Steve Madden shoes at Poly Prep in Brooklyn. I went down to pay Jeremiah a visit, and decided to shoot some photos of my own, and interview Jeremiah for one the publications I write for. I thought a ‘behind the scenes’ of a fashion shoot piece would be interesting to work on, and it turned out that way. I had a blast doing both. Some of mt photos came out great, but I was cheating. I’m lactose intolerant, but still eat cheese and milk, but I tried to an effort not to, but it is difficult if your mother that the French and how you were raised on gourmet cheeses.

Edo Period Fashion and Design
"Women of the Edo period (AD 1603-1868) were very fashionable. Colors, design and style of their kosode (narrow wrist opening type) kimonos changed with the trends of the time. Keicho kosode, dyed in chic colors like red, black and white with delicate embroidery and gold leaf imprint designs were popular in the Keicho era (1596-1615). Dunamically composed motifs with effective use of blank space dominated Kanbun (1661-1673) kosode; Henroku (1688-1704) kosode was characterized by a renaissance style with aristocratic flair featuring motifs taken from literature, but with little blank space. During the Genroku era, motifs created by the folding fan decorator MIYAZAKI Yuzensai became extremely popular amongst commoners and with it the technique of yukzen dye, which made pictorial designs possible.
In the mid- to late Edo period, the trend gradually shifted. Fashion was created and dominated by kabuki actors and courtesans. Komon (small patterns), stripes, and checks, originally favored by samurais, became popular amongst women. According to the newly born Edo chic of "iki," decorations were preferably hidden in the hems and linings, not worn too obviously. Subtle and elegant colors such as gray and brown set the trend. This Edo aesthetic continued into the modern period, and is still alive in contemporary kimono design"

Run to the Sun is a swimsuit and outdoor clothing store in Anchorage, Alaska. As part of the annual Women’s Show in April 2009, Run to the Sun had a fashion show. One of the models invited me to attend to shoot the event. It was pretty cool – great afternoon, the only drawback was the lighting in the Sullivan Arena wasn’t very good. I met several of the models afterwards and hope to shoot with them in the future.
The start of the 1980s saw the rise to stardom of some supermodels; they were fabulously beautiful women and all of them gained great power and recognition in the fashion and modelling industry. It was for the first time that the fashion models were becoming more famous than the fashion designers; in a way, just as recognizable as many Hollywood figures and stars. With this newfound stardom occurred the concept, for the first time in the history of fashion industry, that a model can enjoy the ability to control her career. They were no longer just some living and breathing mannequins. These models were charting their own destiny and course, and in the process had become multi-tiered brands in due course of time. Although the era of true supermodels has passed, the repercussions it had on the careers of many fashion models and the fashion industry as a whole remains alive to this day.
Today, fashion designers want to be associated with the best, hottest figures and faces. Models that are lucky to be able to capture the eye of some top designers will definitely see their careers shooting up. Very shortly, they become the exclusive face of that fashion line for many long years to come. Supermodels no longer roam, and this is truly an exciting time to become a fashion model. What Is Fashion Design?
Fashion design is a form of art dedicated to the creation of clothing and other lifestyle accessories. Modern fashion design is divided into two basic categories: haute couture and ready-to-wear. The haute couture collection is dedicated to certain customers and is custom sized to fit these customers exactly. In order to qualify as a haute couture house, a designer has to be part of the Syndical Chamber for Haute Couture and show a new collection twice a year presenting a minimum of 35 different outfits each time.
Ready-to-wear collections are standard sized, not custom made, so they are more suitable for large production runs. They are also split into two categories: designer/createur and confection collections. Designer collections have a higher quality and finish as well as an unique design. They often represent a certain philosophy and are created to make a statement rather than for sale. Both ready-to-wear and haute-couture collections are presented on international catwalks.
Who Invented It?
The first fashion designer who was more than a simple seamster was Charles Frederick Worth, in the 19th century. Before he set up his fashion design house in Paris, clothing was made by anonymous dressmakers and fashion standards were derived from the styles worn by royalty. Worth was the first designer to actually dictate to his customers what to wear rather than following their demands.
His fashion house became so famous that people were able to attach a face and a name to designs when they knew they were from the House of Worth. This was the beginning of the tradition to have a designer of a house not only create clothing, but also represent the symbol of the brand.
What Does It Take To Be A Fashion Designer?
Fashion design is a form of art. To work as a designer, you should have an artistic and creative personality. You also have to be good at drawing and able to express your ideas in sketches. You don’t necessarily have to be a great artist, but you must have some special skills for combining colors, tones and shades. You also have to be able to work with fabric and use textiles in a creative and original manner. Fashion designers have a good visual imagination and are able to think in three-dimensions and put their ideas into garments.
Fashion designers have to be aware of the fashion market requirements. They have to be very interested in learning new things and read magazines, journals and books on fashion design history and new trends. They also have to be interested in art, visit art galleries and interact with all kinds of artists whenever they have the opportunity. A designer should also have some knowledge and experience of tailoring (cutting, draping, sewing etc.) and be able to tell the difference between different fabric quality levels.
A good understanding of the audience’s lifestyle and customer needs and requirements is also needed in fashion design. Designers should have good communication skills and be able to express their ideas clearly. But most important, they have to be very original and have fresh, innovative ideas.
