5.0 out of 5 stars An honest objective portrayal of the fashion industry, October 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The End of Fashion: The Mass Marketing Of The Clothing Business (Hardcover)
I have always felt that the comparison of the fashion industry to the "Emporer's New Clothes" was exactly what the consumer wanted and what the industry presented. But what so intrigued me about Ms. Agin's book is that she exposed the "Emporer" without clothes and the clothes makers without sarcasm or snide attacks. This made it possible for we aspiring designers to observe a realistic view and grounded attitude as we wade into this evolving dance of dressing. It is no wonder that the author holds such an esteemed position at the Wall Street Journal. I am so hopeful that this is but a beginning of more books from Ms. Agin that deal with other mysteries and facets of a very exciting and dynamic industry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why the consumer is King and which Designers figured it out., August 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The End of Fashion: The Mass Marketing Of The Clothing Business (Hardcover)
The the fashion community is too often blindsided by its own perceived image. This book, which is reader friendly and packed with real information (as opposed to gossip), strips away some of the self serving myths created by the fashion houses and their own sycophantic press. The book shows how houses such as Donna Karan, Ungaro and above all the once mighty French fashion companies have ignored the consumer's needs to their detriment, and how these miscalculations have come back to haunt them. It also explains the wild yet differing success stories of those brands that have become household names such as Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hillfiger. The End of Fashion is entertaining and riveting, certainly to anyone involved in the business of Fashion, but also to the fashion neophyte. Teri Agins' style is that of a real reporter who does not pull her punches, but stays away from gossip and provides the facts. A lot of these facts are not common knowledge, and the "behind the scenes" information will delight and fascinate. The book is an easy read and and highly entertaining as well as insightful. Lifting the corporate veil from sucess stories and failures, the author provides a compelling A to Z (from Armani to Zoran) look at the business of fashion on the eve of the new millenium. It's worth every penny and probably also tax deductible.

2.0 out of 5 stars The End of Fashion, May 10, 2000

This review is from: The End of Fashion: The Mass Marketing Of The Clothing Business (Hardcover)
This is a gold mine for the person who has an interest in the history of the business of high fashion. For the rest of us, it was less than spellbinding. The author has done her homework and with documenting her quotes from various fashion designers and experts in the economics of the fashion industry. It reads like a combination of The Wall Street Journal, Vogue Magazine, and someone's Master's Degree Thesis. There were a few small, uninteresting, black and white photographs of fashion designers grinning next to their famous, rich clients. Personally, I would like to have seen some colored photos of some of their work. As a lay person I had no idea what these people created or why it is supposed to be so great. The claim of the book is that The Fashion Industry just met its demise in the 1990s. I'm not sure whether we will ever be completely free of fashions, but I do know that my interest died in this book long before the last page.

5.0 out of 5 stars Godey's A guide book to Civil War Fashion, July 31, 2000
This review is from: Fashions and Costumes from Godey's Lady's Book: Including 8 Plates in Full Color (Dover Fashion and Costumes) (Paperback)
This is an excellent reference guide for Lady Civil War Reenactors who want to create beautiful day dresses and ball gowns. The book has detailed descriptions of each dress. A true Godey's dress was for the lady of wealth, however many women of average means subscribed to Godey's to get ideas for the dresses they wore. Each page will give you an idea of colors, styles and types of fabrics used. This book is a must along with "Who Wore What" for a true insight into women's fashions of the 1860's

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, June 3, 2004
This review is from: Fashions and Costumes from Godey's Lady's Book: Including 8 Plates in Full Color (Dover Fashion and Costumes) (Paperback)
This book is beautiful. It is a very helpful reference and it is just fun to look at. It was also great to have the description of each of the outfits. This book is much more detailed than the "80 Godey's Full-Color Fashion Plates (1838-1880)" by JoAnne Olian, but then I liked all the full -colored as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars reenacting, Civil War Era, resource material, May 3, 2008

This review is from: Fashions and Costumes from Godey's Lady's Book: Including 8 Plates in Full Color (Dover Fashion and Costumes) (Paperback)
Great book for finding out what they really wore for dressy occasions during the Civil War Era and just prior. Afterwards they did not have the money or the material to do this, but it is lovely to see what they did before the war. Reenacter's who do not wish to spend a lot of money on a gown from the wrong era need to see what is correct before some dressmaker puts them into whatever pattern that SHE likes to make! RESEARCH is the key.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Illustrated Historical Fashion Volumes Available!, April 8, 2007
This review is from: Fashion (Taschen 25th Anniversary) (Hardcover)
This is the most beautifully illustrated book available on the history of fashion. I have looked at many, but none are so thorough and definitive for the 18th to the 20th centuries. The publisher lists the book at $49.99 (unbelievable for what you get!). It has been reprinted several times since I first became aware of it. Each time I have missed my chance to get a copy -- It seems to sell out quite regularly. After almost losing hope, I was finally able to get a copy of this latest edition!

The current edition is a set which consists of two large volumes. The first covers the 18th and 19th centuries, and the second is devoted to the 20th century. These two tomes are in a sturdy outer case. The illustrations are clear and detailed, making it easy to examine the construction used for the garments, and also are displayed so that one can see the overall beauty of the craftsmanship. They are truly works of art! Text is at a minimum; the books consist first and foremost of these beautiful illustrations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Books, Wonderful Pictures, Great Information, January 8, 2007
This review is from: Fashion (Taschen 25th Anniversary) (Hardcover)
I work in a library where volume 1 of this book had been requested numerous times, so I got to see it close-up several times before eventually deciding that I needed to own it. When I ordered it, it wasn't yet clear in the listing that it was 2 volumes, and I thought that I was getting volume 1 only--in paperback--and I still thought the price was great considering how many wonderful photographs the book contains. Imagine my surprise when I got two hefty hardback tomes!

I ordered these books to assist in writing historical novels, wanting to inject a bit of verisimilitude in regards to the clothing involved, and it's been a great resource. The brief essays at the beginning of each book are rich with detail about things like what corsets and dresses were called, how the clothes were worn, changing fashion trends, etc.

I liked this so well that I've given copies to several friends.

Rare Bird of Fashion: The Irreverent Iris Apfel

Captures the unique style of fashion maverick Iris Apfel and her exuberantly idiosyncratic personal chic.

With remarkable panache and discernment, Iris Apfel combines styles, colors, textures, and patterns without regard to period, provenance, or aesthetic conventions. She is a unique style icon.

Over ninety sumptuous color plates, photographed by Eric Boman, show off a selection of Apfel's extraordinary outfits on wittily posed mannequins, some sporting her trademark outsized spectacles. The originality of her style is typically revealed in her mixing of Dior haute couture with flea-market finds, Dolce & Gabbana lizard trousers with nineteenth-century ecclesiastical vestments, pink Lanvin worn with ropes of Navajo turquoise. Apfel's eclectic pieces might come from a Parisian couture house, an American thrift shop, or a North African souk, or they may have been made to her own design in a tiny studio.

Detailed captions describe every aspect of the outfits, including names and dates of designers, plus full information on fabrics and accessories. A selection of audacious accessories also comes under the spotlight: a giant necklace made of bear claws, a turn-of-the-century Indian horse ornament worn as a necklace, a parrot's-head brooch in colored glass and rhinestones.

The book includes an introduction by Harold Koda, director of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and an essay by Apfel herself, describing her lifelong love affair with style and illustrated with vintage photographs from her personal collection. 169 photographs and illustrations, 149 in color

I was lucky enough to view the exhibit 'Iris Apfel - Rare Bird of Fashion' at the Norton Museum in Palm Beach, and what a visual treat it was... Not only is she an icon of fashion, but her style, her combinations of colors and her very different approach to the matter is something everybody should see and study. I have seen and met her in New York, she is the most terrific person!!! The book is amazing as well, great photography!!! I will always treasure this book and every time I open it, there is something else to marvel at or read about... An absolutely great source of inspiration, that simply makes you smile! One could only wish there will be other 'rare birds' to follow her lead.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful inspiration, June 11, 2007
This review is from: Rare Bird of Fashion: The Irreverent Iris Apfel (Hardcover)
This book reminds all its readers that true style grows from individuality. In a time were you would recognize a stylist's style easier than the style of a designer, Iris Apfel's approach to and interpretation of fashion is the light at the end of the tunnel, she certainly has nudged me into the one or the other "true to myself experiment". Iris Apfel's witty introduction perfectly accessoirizes the clothes and jewellery presented, not only poviding background information on how this exhibition came to life but also shedding light on a certainly most interesting and colorful life in a warmhearted and humorous way. This book most certainly will be a longterm occupant of my coffee table.

This review is from: Rare Bird of Fashion: The Irreverent Iris Apfel (Hardcover)
Loved, loved this book. The comments, the photography and most importantly the crediting of designers to each style was extremely well done. This rare bird of fashion serves us notice that we should embrace our individual style and glory in it and not follow the herd or be shy about manifesting our true "feathers".
